This old defensive building, a coastal artillery unit, built from 1810 onwards, next to the previous one in the south of the island, in the neighbourhood of Pereiró (can´t be visited), in the east of the island. It must be understood in the context of the War of Independence against the French, 1808-1814, to ensure the defense of the entrance to the Ria de Pontevedra.

The truth is was never finished, although some people from different parts of the coast were encouraged to settle on the island as workers, and therefore, because of these unfinished fortification plans, the island was inhabited again after periods of abandonment and depopulation.

Today, Roda castle, only has the base of what was a semicircular fortification. Located in Punta do Castelo and in the marked trail of the same name, is now in ruins. Its blocks of stones were reused by neighbours for building houses and also because of landslides.
