In 1955 Ons reached 535 inhabitants. It belongs the council of Bueu, village of Santa María de Beluso.

These inhabitants from the last century (whose ancestors were from the last century) built an own culture which is reflected in its identity and characteristics.

The island has a dispersed habitat regarding the population, although houses are grouped by neighbourhood, Curro, Cano, Canexol, Pereiró, Chan gives Gunpowder, Cucorno, Melide and Centulo, which include lots of hórreos with “celeiro” , setting an idea of  the crops reaching extension.

Houses were one-storey houses, facing the east, whitewashed, gable roof and small windows to avoid north winds and salinity, becoming a  living example of houses and the Galician coast earth constructions such as mills, hórreos, wash and porches.

Next to the two-story house Canexol, called rectory house,  delimited by two large hórreos, is the space where the parties were celebrated until the 60s, a building housing which would be the home of the owners of the island Marquises, the teacher´s house and school, district and tavern.

The neighbours of the different neighbourhoods gathered in these taverns, in the old chapel, where the cemetery is, in the killing of the pig, weddings, parties (likeSan Xaquín), in the atrium of the party, where there were plenty of rockets, bagpipes, drums and tambourines, and also sang, danced or played “the key (a traditional game).
