The Mount Facho, the hermitage of San Guillerme and the church of Santa María das Areas make up an area of historic and artistic value listed as a Place of Cultural Interest (BIC), in the heart the Cape Finisterre, listed itself as a European heritage site in 2007.

What is a Place of Cultural Interest? It is a legally protected element of the Spanish heritage, characterized by its historical, artistic and anthropological value.

Look at the map in front of you to spot the BICs in this area:

  • The Hermitage of San Guillerme.
  • The Church of Santa María das Areas.
  • The cruceiro (stone cross), cemetery, courtyard and chapterhouse of the church of Santa María.
  • The remains of Mount Facho, the Holy Rocks and the Casa do Facho, the ruins of an old lighthouse.
  • Semáforo, a former signaling facility, now a hotel.
  • The lighthouse. Located at the southern end of the Cape and built in 1853, though data about it is only available from 1888 on.

Go up Mount Facho (787 feet) taking the road to the village and then a trail on the left, some 650 feet from where you are now. You will have in front of you the best view of the Finisterre peninsula, including the beach of Mar de Fóra and the town itself. It looks like a big whale tail!
