Many of the inhabitants of both Arou and Camelle have Nordic features. The historian Chao Espina comments that in these two places there existed the so-called "Assembly of Nordemán", a non-aggression pact in exchange of favours, such as using women as sexual objects. Here, he points out, "the children have blond hair and blue eyes like the people of the North, but as they grow up, they darken". The Viking invasions of Galicia took place between the 8th and 11th centuries.
The urban beach of Arou is one of the best swimming beaches in all of Camariñas. It is a crescent shaped beach sheltered from the winds, with calm waters and white sands. During the summer it is cleaned daily and has a lifeguard service and a local police patrol.
A boardwalk, perfect for an evening walk, stretches along from one end of the beach. On the opposite side, 2 km along the coast, is Camelle. It is a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk.
In front of you liethe Lobeiras Islands where the most coveted shellfish, the goose barnacle, grows, preferring areas with strong surf. The history of this town is related to shipwrecks such as the Santa Maria, C. Monteagudo or Nil.
The stretch between Cape Vilán and Arou, a particularly beautiful and protected landscape, is part of the Natura 2000 Network.
