The parish of Santa Mariña is located in a valley between two hills at the base of Monte Branco. The layout of the village is characterized by its separation of work and family life. The houses are at the top, while the traditional port with its small fishing boats is downtown. In fact, the upper part of the village was a vantage point from which the arrival of invaders could be watched for.

This port now has less activity, but it is still base to the percebeiros gathering goose barnacles in these shores. If you happen to be here at low tide, you will see them gathering goose barnacles on the rocks around the port or from their boats.

Another curiosity is that the place where this church stands today was home to the twice-rebuilt Benedictine monastery –the black monks– of Santa Mariña de Tosto.
