Between the 16th and the late 18th centuries, before the Catalans introduced both xávega fishing and dry salting in Galicia, including Camariñas, the most common fishing method was "purse seine" fishing. This was a community system in which every sailor took part, after which they were paid accordingly: this system was called "quiñón".
Each sailor kept a piece of the net at home and in September, during the sardine season, they were sewn together. The "ateleiro" supervised and sewed the large net measuring up to 1 km that was later set at sea by two pinazas (light, flat-bottomed sailing or rowing vessels).
At the time of fishing, the big vessels shot the nets and the small ones stretched them. The catch was shared among the sailors.
Now go for a walk round the old dock of Camariñas. From here you can experience the port activity from a different angle. In front of you, (westwards), is the mouth of the Grande river. Keep heading south to go to Punta do Castelo, where you will see the old stronghold of the Soberano Battery.
